Aeration

One of the first steps to a healthy lawn starts with aeration. Clay soils found in Colorado benefit from core aeration 1 to 2 times per year.

Aeration is the process of mechanically removing cores of soil and thatch from the lawn allowing oxygen, water and nutrients to reach the root zone.

Benefits of core aeration:

  • Reduction of soil compaction and excessive thatch

Thatch can prevent water and air from reaching the root zone and provides a home for disease producing organisms and insects.  A healthy layer of thatch does not exceed one half inch in thickness.

  • Increased oxygen flow to the root zone

Oxygen aids in the growth of beneficial microorganisms that digest thatch. Oxygen will also help prevent spreading of fungal diseases.

  • Increase in water and nutrient penetration
  • Regeneration of roots and shoots
  • Break up of hydrophobic crusts on the turf

Guilford Lawn and Sprinkler uses commercial grade shaft driven aerators to pull the deepest and most plugs of any core aerator on the market.  We ask that you mark any sprinkler heads that are in the center of your lawn before aeration so we can avoid hitting those heads during the process. After aeration the resulting plugs should be left on your lawn where they will break down and redistribute organic matter into your turf.
